Abstract:
• Output Value: Taiwan's food biotechnology and agricultural biotechnology saw an increase in the production values in 2013. A recovery in consumption power and the launch of newly developed,nutritional,healthy products boosted the value of food biotechnology by 7.98 percent. Meanwhile, the production of animal vaccines and plant seeds increased the production value of agricultural biotechnology by 11.05 percent year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2014, demand for dietary supplements grew steadily and Taiwan continued to develop animal vaccines and carried out seed tissue culture to prevent any eventual disease outbreaks and stimulate demand for plant seeds in Taiwan and overseas, supporting a rise in the production values of both agricultural biotechnology and food biotechnology. • Exports: Of the exports of all products of Taiwan's agricultural biotechnology, Orchidaceae witnessed the best performance. Meanwhile, China develops competitive flasked seedling, eating away at the Taiwan's exports to Korea. Of the exports of all products of Taiwan's agricultural biotechnology, exports of flasked culture orchid seedling bottled orchidaceae seedlings were the highest. • Operating Performance: The revenues of firms within the industry differed from one another in 2013. As for food biotechnology, Grape King Inc was the best performer in terms of revenue and profit. As for agricultural biotechnology, the revenue of Taiwan Orchid Professionals Corporation Limited missed expectations in the first half of 2013. With exception of poor revenue of Taiwan Orchid Professionals Corporation Limited in the first two months of 2013, the revenues of food biotechnology firms were stronger than in the same period a year earlier. • Industry Dynamics: To achieve the integration of light-emitted diode industry with electronic machinery and equipment and agricultural industry, firms from other sectors relied on hydroponic systems to build plant factories and branch out into the agricultural sector to boost the overall operating performance. • Industry Outlook: Both food biotechnology and agricultural biotechnology will see growth in 2014. However, growth in the food biotechnology industry will be weaker than in 2013 due market saturation, while growth in the agricultural biotechnology will be faster, thanks to the development of plant tissue seedlings, animal vaccines and plant and animal test reagents.
