Tunneling of electrons through classically forbidden barriers is a basic process in all matter
at the atomic scale. Artificial tunneling structures, the topic of this book, contain barriers
having an atomic or Angstrom length scale in one dimension, but, in the transverse directions
have laboratory length scales of microns to millimeters. Overcoming the technical difficulties
in preparing such uniform barriers in solid state structures and using these to reproducibly
demonstrate the predictions of elementary quantum mechanics has been relatively recent, dating
from the work of Esaki on semiconductor junctions in 1958 |
