内容简介: |
Eight years ago, From Grassland to Glacier wasfirst published and distributed throughout the Boulder area. Its purpose was to provide residents of Boulder County with a convenient guide to the natural history of that vicinity. The book's nontechnical description of ecological systems and processes was written for anyone wanting to increase his or her enjoyment of the out-of-doors. No other guidebook to the natural history of the Front Range existed, and it was widely used by land-use planners and as a textbook for high school, college, and adult education classes.
Although addressing one small region of Colorado, the book found acceptance by residents and educators up and down the Front Range and on Colorado's Western Slope as well. This widespread use was due in part to the fact that the natural history of the Boulder area closely resembles that of many other areas in the state.
Encouraged by this acceptance of From Grassland to Glacier, we have revised and expanded Cornelia Mutel's original version to serve as a guide to the natural history of the entire state of Colorado. John Emerick joined Mutel as a coauthor to assist in the preparation of this new edition, since Cornelia now lives in Iowa. John modified all of the original chapters to include statewide environmental features and added much new information, including discussions of mountain grasslands, piñon pine-juniper woodlands, bristlecone pine forests, and shrubland types that do not occur in Boulder County.
The book's format remains largely that of the original edition, with each of the major ecosystem units being described in terms of its physical appearance, location, site characteristics, dominant plants and animals, ecological processes, and use by humans. The book focuses on natural ecosystems, although modification of ecosystems |
