In this third edition, the concept of the book remains unchanged. However, many corrections
of errors and unclear points of the second edition have been implemented. Several new figures
and pictures of scientists have been added in order to illustrate the text and to get a more vivid
perception of scientists who have first formed our present knowledge or who have invented
new equipment for performing fundamental experiments.
Some new sections on modern developments in atomic and molecular physics have been
added, such as the free electron laser, a short course on molecular symmetry and spectroscopy,
the atomic fountain and optical lattices. The discussion on the optical frequency comb has
been enlarged in order to emphasize the importance of this new technique for high-precision
metrology and spectroscopy. In particular, the literature has been upgraded to include new
textbooks or papers covering these modern developments.
Many colleagues and students have helped to optimize the third edition by pointing out to
errors and suggesting improvements. I want to thank all of them.
I do hope that this new edition will find a similar friendly acception as the former ones, and
I will be grateful for any hint of errors and suggestions for improvements. Any e-mail will be
