This chapter is about some of the things that economists and historians can learn from each other when studying global history. It focuses on three questions. First, what can historians learn about global economic history from economists? Second, what can cliometricians and other economists usefully learn from more traditional historians? And finally, what can economists who are only interested in the world we live in today usefully learn from global economic history? It tries to answer these questions by referring to three well-developed literatures in global economic history: first, the literature on the history of globalization and deglobalization; second, the literature tracking trends in relative living standards across the globe; and third, the literature which seeks to link the previous two, asking to what extent experiences of divergence or convergence in living standards can be explained by interactions between regions, as opposed to autonomous forces operating within each one. |
